The programme
Twelve sessions, in the order the RSA sets them
Every first-time car learner in Ireland has to complete Essential Driver Training before sitting the practical test. Sessions 1 to 8 build on each other and must be taken in order. Sessions 9 to 12 can be taken in any order once the first eight are done.
fixed order any order
-
1
Car controls and safety checks
Cockpit drill, mirrors, dashboard warnings, the walk-around. You finish able to move off and stop on a quiet road.
-
2
Correct positioning
Where the car sits on a straight, through a bend and approaching a junction. Position is one of the top reasons people fail.
-
3
Changing direction
Left turns, right turns and the junction types you meet around Clondalkin and Lucan every day.
-
4
Progression management
Driving at the speed the conditions ask for. Being too slow costs more test candidates than being too fast.
-
5
Correct positioning, advanced
Roundabouts, multi-lane roads and complex junctions — including the three-lane roundabouts on the N7 corridor.
-
6
Anticipation and reaction
Reading the road far enough ahead to have a plan already made. We use commentary driving to train your eyes.
-
7
Sharing the road
Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, buses. Includes the 1.5 metre passing rule and how examiners look for awareness.
-
8
Driving safely through traffic
Dense city traffic and lane discipline. Worth booking for a rush hour if you are testing at Tallaght.
-
9
Changing direction, complex
Filter lanes, lane changes, and the three manoeuvres: turnabout, reverse around a corner, hill start.
-
10
Speed management, complex
National roads, bad weather, heavy traffic. Matching speed to conditions when the conditions keep changing.
-
11
Driving calmly
Smooth inputs, eco-driving and lower fuel use. Smoothness is marked in its own right under vehicle controls.
-
12
Night driving
After dark, dipped beam discipline and glare. We book this one for a genuinely dark evening, not a summer twilight.
